Thomas
A. Barnes, 73, a lifelong resident of Aurora, IL passed away on Wednesday, July
5th, 2023 at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. He was born in Aurora
on July 12, 1949, a son of the late Thomas and Alyce
(Thompson) Barnes. Thomas graduated from West Aurora High School in 1967.
Thomas known to many of his friends as "Tommy" or "Rocky"
or "The King", worked for 49 years for the United States Postal
Service (USPS) in Aurora as a Letter Carrier until his retirement in 2019.
A 53 year loyal union member of the National
Association of Letter Carriers Aurora, IL Branch 219, Thomas last served as
branch sergeant-at-arms, he also had served the branch in other roles over the
years. Thomas also worked part-time for Association for Individual Development
(AID) where he served as a House Parent and as a Crisis Intervention Officer.
Other past employment included Stephens-Adamson Mfg. Co. , Illinois Bell, and
also served as an Auxiliary Police Officer with the Aurora Police Department in
the 1960s and 70s.
Thomas was a longtime member of the St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Montgomery.
Survivors include his sister: Julie A. (Barnes) Bragg of Montgomery, his
nephew: Jason (Sarah) Bragg of Montgomery, his nieces: Jennifer B. (Sean) Newsam of Centreville, Virginia, Kristyn M. Bragg of
Montgomery, great nephews: Erik J. Bragg of Montgomery, Ethan Newsam of Centreville, Virginia, and great niece: London Newsam of Centreville, Virginia, many cousins in
California, and his daughter: Heather (Matthew) Bartmes
of Elmhurst. He also is survived by his adopted family, the Markhardt
family.
A special thank you to the Good Samaritan, Lewis Medina of Aurora, for saving
his life in 2021.
He was preceded in death by his parents; Alyce J.
(Thompson) Barnes, and Thomas F. Barnes, and his brother-in-law: Robert
"Bob" Bragg Jr.
